I posted this on the Daz forums, and I thought it needed a place here as well. When I first started doing clothes, I couldn't even find out what TOOLS I needed to accomplish the task.
If you're like me, and don't own Poser, the answers to these questions were even HARDER to find.
Making clothes for Poser and/or DazStudio you'll need:
1. A modeling program to create the clothes (Hexagon, Blender, Wings3D, Maya, etc.)
2. A way to group the modeled object to the same groups in the character your are creating the clothes for. (you can group in Hexagon, Blender, etc. or you can purchase an add-on like Auto Group Editor)
3. Poser or Daz Studio Figure Setup Tools (Skeleton Setup) to transfer the character skeleton (rig) to the clothing item you created.
4. Poser or Daz Studio Figure Setup Tools (Joint Editor) to modify/create falloff zones to make the clothing move with character poses correctly.
5. A 2D program to create and add textures to the clothing object you created. (Photoshop, GIMP, Paint Shop, etc.)
6. Optionally, a software tool to transfer morphs to your clothing item. For Daz Studio, this will require the Advanced Figure Setup Tools, or you can purchase add-ons to complete this process.
Those are the basics. Each step will require a lot of learning and experimenting to perfect the skills necessary.

Steps to creating conforming clothes using DazStudio Figure Setup Tools.
1. Create your clothing object in the modeler of your choice.
2. While in the modeling program, UV map your object.
3. Group your object.
4. Open the object in UVMapper and write the texture template to a file.
5. Rig the skeleton in Figure Setup Tools Skeleton Setup
6. Make changes to falloff as necessary using the FST Joint Editor
7. Add textures, bump maps, etc. for the finished product.
8. Export as a CR2

I also think part of it is them being tired of seeing this same question posed. When I first thought to model, I asked on Rendo. I felt I was the only to ask. After I asked, over months/years, its been asked numerous times.

Oh ok. I hate that too. Frustrated me to no end. I also think part of it is them being tired of seeing this same question posed. When I first thought to model, I asked on Rendo. I felt I was the only to ask. After I asked, over months/years, its been asked numerous times. I understand that it must get asked hundreds of times, but if you don't have the patience to answer the question thoroughly, don't respond. It's not helpful to be treated like a world class dummy when you ask an innocent question, no matter how many times it's been asked. If the Daz forums had a decent search engine, I could understand the frustration - but they don't. You can search for a year and not find another post like the one you want an answer to.

think in any large forum like Daz 50% of the people are helpfull 40% think someone else can explain it better and the last 10% can be downright nasty
its funny how the nasty ones are the most remembered rofl

actually .. you can transfer the rigging to a new clothing item cr2 via a text editor. this is the Old Skool way *lol* And you can do the grouping in UVmapper, even the free version if you are stubborn enough. Lyrra

Lyrra LOL, as I stated above, you CAN do grouping in Hexagon, too. And, using a spreadsheet and a text editor to rig seems a bit of a waste of time when the tools are affordable, no? So, who wrote the first CR2 which included movement dials? My guess would be one of the Morphing Fantasy Dresses.

Hey, if we wanted to be innovators, we'd be working on how to invent something. We're not. We're trying to create CLOTHES.

The other half, I try to be in the 50%. I do my best not to fall into the 10% type described above.

I hope I'm never the person that says, "That question has been asks so many times before, I'm tired of replying to it. If you would just do a search here, you would know the answer."
People like that waste their time and your time by bragging about how great they know everything and how they can't be bothered to help you, when they could have given the answer in less time.

I agree too if I know the answer I will help and have even gone and done seaches for the person. I have trouble getting the words right sometimes and some people don't like that, and trying to explain when some thing is not working out well just fuzzels me. So patience some times is needed with everyone. We are all here to learn and help each other. Hugs Trixe

I remember how I felt and try my very best to write in the simpliest terms(not because I feel others are stupid, but because you have to in order to NOT confuse people who are new to things). I bold, use CAPS for key words, as well use diagrams. I also wait to make sure they understand completely. I'm a calm person by nature and laugh most things off, as not to stress myself, but sometimes people really do come with snarkyness instead of help. Now THAT gets my goat!
