wondered what prob u had with trans maps but after reading other thread I think ur getting mixed up?? and u mean displacement/bump maps??
best way I know for seamless tex is the flip an mirror way
double canvas size both ways
dup layer then flip it
merge
dup again and mirror
merge
then cut out the centre square to the same size as the original was
hope that makes sense cos I aint sorted how to post a sketch yet
is a bit of messing about but there is a few filters that can do it quite well
I tend not to like the "create a seamless tile" function, since it has a bad habit of blurring out chunks of the texture.
I think I understand what heddheld is describing, since that's how I usually make a seamless tile from a texture photo.
Original canvas size being roughly...

_______________
Then quadruple by doubling both height and width, to get something like...

Put your original texture into the section marked "1"
Duplicate and mirror, and put that in the section marked "2"
Duplicate and flip the original, for the section marked "3"
Duplicate, flip and mirror the original for the section marked "4"
Arrange the layers so that the texture lines up perfectly on the inner edges, and you're set.
Optionally, if desired, you can trim or re-size it to make a smaller file.
However, if you choose to trim -- you'll have to be extremely careful to get the center area so that the new edges will still tile seamlessly.
Something like this...

Apologies, the diagram isn't inclined to be precise.
Hopefully that helps illustrate the general idea?
