Where do we post questions for help in modeling? lol
I wasn't sure where to post my question so I'll post it here and it can be moved if I'm posting in the incorrect forum.
I would like to know how you make ruffles all the way around the front of a vest? I haven't gotten anything to look really good yet and I'm wearing out the delete button on my keyboard.
Also, I can't get the sweep surface tool to work so I figure I'm doing something wrong.
Every tutorial I've watched they sure make it look sooooo simple but when I try some of their methods, I find it's not as simple as it looks. lol Being a newbie sure hurts when there's so much I want to learn how to do.
So sorry for this book as I get wound up sometimes asking questions . lol

So sorry for this book as I get wound up sometimes asking questions . lol Well, that kinda depends on how the vest is made. For instance, are there a lot of directional changes in the path you are trying to follow? In other words, is the vest curved or does it make sharp turns? It would help a lot if you could post a screen capture of the vest. If you're using Hexagon, the best place to post this would have been in the Hexagon forum. No biggie, we can move it there when we get done - wouldn't want you to lose your post now.

Thank you. The vest curves at the bottom front a little and then curves at the chest a little going up to the shoulders and around the neck.
I'll try to get a screenshot if this computer will let me do anything. It sure hasn't been cooperating with me this week.

Ok here's the pitiful looking vest at it's beginning. You're going to have to grab the edges you wish to have ruffles, and extend them. Then you go to every other point and pull them up.

Thank you. I did try to do them that way but it sure made a mess and ended up not looking like ruffles at all. Sometimes I honestly think hexagon hates me or either my computer, not sure which at times. lol

Speaking of ruffles, it's my goal to recreate this wedding dress. Attachments:

oooh that gown is lovely. If I could only master something like that I'd be soooo happy.
On the edge selection, do I use the extrude surface or just the yellow square on the manipulator? I tried the extrude surface a moment ago and hex crashed on me several times and but before it crashed, the extrusion went crazy and I hadn't even done anything at that point other than just click on the tool and it threw points and edges all over the place and then crashed.

OMg have you reset Hex? Edit------->Preference Editor------>Reset all prefs to default. I know Hex can be wonky at times but that's way outta control.

The only time you use extrude surface is when you are working with faces. In this case, we want to extrude the EDGE, not the face.
Now, for your first test, select one of the edges on the bottom and then hit Loop. Watch your loop. If it does not go all the way around where you want the ruffle, extrude is never going to do it in one motion.
For instance, I suspect where the vest edge changes direction at the center top, your loop will stop. If so, you won't get a one motion extrusion if you want the ruffle in the V.
Now, if all you want to extrude are those edges which are successfully looped, then choose Fast Extrude and extrude the EDGE you looped. Don't forget to Validate. Make it as wide as you want the ruffle, then, using the universal manipulator Yellow scale button, scale up the NEW edge of the ruffle. You'll begin to get your ruffle. I would then choose every other POINT and pull UP just a little so that you are ruffling the ruffle.

Thank you for your help. I have managed to get the ruffle around the vest although it still has a lot of tweaking to get them to look like I want. I want some of them to be bent back and some not so I don't know quite how to get that accomplished yet without messing anything up on it and breaking any edges apart.
I was surprised when I selected the edge and looped it that the selection did go all around the top with none missing, so I didn't have to fix that before proceeding to do the ruffle.
I did reset hex in the preferences and that solved the problem with it misbehaving.

Just be careful when you are moving around the edges not to cross over another polygon. If you do, it won't render correctly. Also, once you are finished playing with the ruffle, you should select all the faces of your item and unify normals - a lot of time when I'm doing that much moving I manage to flip some of the normals.

I'm working on a Spanish Dress tutorial. I discovered something today about folds...and maybe Rox can chime in here...it's not just pulling up or pulling back every other point or edge. I found that you have to do that along with pulling FACES forward. So for instance, with this dress, (with symmetry on) I highlighted a face and pulled it frontward. Then I highlighted the adjacent edge and pulled that backward. And of course I used the universal manipulator to line up the top with the skirt. Attachments:

You really have to be careful pulling BACK as you'll cross polygons pretty easy doing that. Something as large as a skirt, I'd probably pull up and back, but not a ruffle. Remember, with a ruffle, you can use a ruffled embellishment in texturing, so all you really have to give them is the polygons in the mesh and in the UV map.

I especially like when they add some transparency and lace!
