Hey everyone!
Got a major problem that I have tried countless times to do and I absolutely suck at it apparently.
Ya know the wispy ends of hair? How do you get that? When I have tried to do any kind of transparency on a hair model {just a quick model of hair strips even} I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the ends of the hair to be wispy and well...hairlike.
Usually I end up with square ends that are vaguely transparent..but you can still see the square ends of my model strips
I have seen countless hair models that have the same type of modeling {square ended strips} that look like hair when rendered...and Im thinking its transparency maps....
Anyone have a clue, or have a link or 3 that might teach me what Im looking for?
Thanks!

I have never tried to texture hair, but I'd suggest you start your quest by opening a trans map of a paid hair item. Having done so, and textured some things, I'd say that it's a matter of drawing some very fine lines in varying shades of grey and white on a black background. A graphic tablet and pen makes this process easier. If you look at the template and the trans map below of AprilYSH's free Mitch Hair, I think you get a good idea of what is required. Attachments:

Just a note. By starting with a black background, you assure everything is transparent.
You allow your "colors" and texture through using the white/grey strands.
Everything BLACK will be gone.

Or if you want to be really sneaky, and you have the good luck to know someone with reasonably long dark hair and a scanner... you could have them lay some of that dark hair on the scanner, with the white background. Take a picture, save it, and then make another copy of the picture and convert it to the negative (dark background, pale hair). Increase contrast till you have black for the background, and white for at least some of the hair. Then copy and paste sections over a copy of your hair template in layers, adjusting to fit as needed. Viola! A very realistic-looking transparency. (PS - in a pinch, longer doll's hair will work equally well. *winks conspiratorially*)

not read all of them threads yet got one BIG prob before I read more Poser dont use the alpha channel !!! its trans channel works best off a *greyscale image*, but it does like 16 bit greyscale so if u have an app to produce 16 bit (eg photoshop) you will get more control to get the "fine lines" it requires best way I tried so far is make your map rectangular then reduce it to square after painting eg template at 1024x1024 resize to 2048x1024 do painting (make ur own brush !! just dots "........." an if u got a tablet use the pressure settings) after u done with the painting reduce image back to 1024x1024
*greyscale* ~ poser will take an rgb pic then convert it internaly that may give you a better range then an 8 bit greyscale I dunno Bagginsbill (?) could prob tell you how poser does that once your ready set the trans dial to 1 (full on) trans edge to 1 an falloff to about 50% (think that dial is 0-100 forget without looking) can adjust edge an falloff but not the trans dial hope that helps will try to knock some pics up for you but cant promise at the mo'
